The owner, Robin took us out. We decided to take the private tour with the doors off because neither of us were afraid. The owner was really friendly, made us feel comfortable even though it was both of our first time in a helicopter. He was very knowledgeable about the island and friendly about telling us interesting facts, describing the weather patterns, and even told us about the places that we HAD to go before leaving. For a first time helicopter ride, it was perfect.
I had the UNFORTUNATE experience of being the lightest person on this tour that i took in Jan of 2012. I am a 5'9", 140 lb woman. I am not that small. I was 1 of 5 people in their helicopter that is made to comfortably hold 4 grown adults and maybe a child in the front middle spot. Instead, there were 4 grown men all between 190 and 230 lbs, and myself. So, being the lightest, they placed me in a spot that a child 80 lbs or less might could fit. I was too distracted to enjoy the sights and EXTREMELY uncomfortable. The shoulder harnesses were painfully digging into the tops of my shoulders and also i developed uncomfortable pains in my neck and upper back from being squished in between two grown men for an hour flight. Unless you are a very petite woman or a child, i suggest you immediately demand a refund or another flight if they try to place you in the front middle spot. Despite my dissatisfaction and discomfort, they refused to issue me a refund which is the part i am least pleased with the most. They have very poor customer service and the woman behind the counter at the time was not very friendly. What's the purpose of paying over $200 for a doors off tour if you are not by a door to enjoy it?!
Because we booked so late, we were offered to go individually on 3 separate flights which we took. The helicopter was only a four seater with pilot, so everyone had a door seat, and the pilot made sure that everyone could get a good view and would turn so the other side could get pictures. Eli was our pilot and did an excellent job of talking us through the tour. We had a great time and will definitely be back. We did a driving and boat tour around Kauai but this was the best way to see the island. The only reason the facilities did not get an excellent rating was because of the use of a porta-potty, but everything was very clean and comfortable.
The storm actually made the tour because it created an abundance of waterfalls. Time in the air went by too fast; we learned a lot about the island, including the good spots to snorkel, eat, etc which made us enjoy the island even more. Taking this tour with this company and having Robin as our guide truly made our trip.
When my boyfriend and I went to Kauai, it was a little stormy, so we waited to take the helicopter tour until the end of our trip, hoping to catch sunnier days.
On what is likely to be my only trip to Kauai for some time to come, I really wanted to get up in a helicopter early one day to take photographs. As a photojournalist, I know the best way to shoot aerials is with the door or window off of the aircraft; only two companies seem to offer this. The earliest one company could offer a time the week I was here was 9:45 am; I signed up with Inter-Island for an 8:15 flight in hopes they could sell the other two seats. They did, and we departed right on time on a gloriously beautiful day. Pilot Josh handled the aircraft with aplomb, and delivered a very informative commentary along the way. He also made sure that both right and left side passengers got equal opportunity for photos. If you really want to see and/or photograph the interior of Kauai, this is the only way to go. If/when I return to Kauai, I'll be signing up for another flight with Inter-Island!
Great flight, great pilot. If got the right front seat, and being a Vietnam era helicopter pilot, I was in Heaven! Closed doors, air conditioning along with background music is better than no flight, but no doors puts you there. You deserve this!
