Kauai Shoe Advice...

It's a great viewpoint. You can see/photograph much more of the ridge line on the opposite side of the canyon as compared to the viewpoint the trail starts out at. Some steep potions of the trail seem to have been washed out and are getting difficult to climb. Bring some shoes with grip.

Interesting hike to get here but I think views along the Pihea Trail to get to the Pihea Vista junction (around the 0.5 mile mark) are better.

Yes, this is a great viewpoint, if you can see anything. Beware, the view may be completely blocked by fog/clouds. While we were there, we could see the valley briefly, and we waited for a long time. Also, beware of the very difficult hike if it has been raining - and this is area gets some of the most rain on earth; muddy, slippery, steep trail. I felt safe on the trail, it isn't right on the ridge. When at the lookout and you choose to go to the edge for that great pictures, there is nothing between you dropping literally 1,000s of feet to the valley below.

This post is just about shoes! Read the other reviews for gushing posts about the beauty of nature! It rains an average of 260 days per year in Kauai. Don't let that stop you, the rain is comfortable and rarely cold, and often passes within minutes followed by sunshine. However this means that most days you hike it will be muddy. Your feet and calves will get covered in slick wet mud when you hike this trail. Do not wear flip flops or you will struggle a lot. Even wearing runners that have a flat tread it will feel like you are walking on ice, it's so slick once your shoes get covered. Runners or hikers with an agressive tread will be best. They don't need to be heavy duty... They just need to have a good tread. If you came on vacation without shoes like that, you can still do the hike but it will be a bit of a slog and you may fall a few times in the mud. Just take your time and enjoy it either way!!

Yes it can definitely be muddy as other people have noted. But at least hike from the Pu'u O Kila Lookout down the trail as far as your footwear will take you (flip flops won't get you very far). Great views along the way. At the last segment to the Pihea Vista be prepared to grab some roots or whatever else you can grab and scamper up what is usually a slick final incline. Might get a little muddy depending on the weather but you'll be happy regardless.
